What is Data Communication?

Data communication refers to the transmission of data between devices through an transmission medium. It is possible to do this using wired media like twisted pair cable, coaxial cable, or wireless media like radio waves or optic fibers. The data needs to be encoded, encapsulated, and transmitted by the device sending it then decoded and decapsulated at the receiving device. This procedure is similar to analog signal transmission, however, it is more complicated and concentrates on binary data (1s and 1s &).

Companies are making use of data communications to better communicate information to dispersed users. This can improve efficiency within their organizations. For instance, an automobile manufacturer needed to communicate information to 6’000 inexperienced and dispersed dealers of spare parts to ensure that their inventory was in line with demand and reduce waste. This required communication via the network that was not optimized for data communication and an app on mobile that was difficult to navigate for new users.

Effective data communication starts by understanding your audience’s perspective on the data. It is about creating visuals to help tell the story, providing contextual information, and articulating insights with a clear narrative. It also involves tailoring the content to the individual audiences depending on their level of hierarchy, technical proficiency, and interest level. Lastly, it involves pushing the boundaries of creativity to make data communication more memorable and memorable.
